Speeding ticket calculator
Pick the posted limit and enter your speed. You’ll see the total on the ticket, the demerit points, and the court figure if convicted.
Ticket totals are our own maths: the Schedule 43 set fine, plus the O. Reg. 161/00 surcharge, plus $5 in costs (the $5 figure comes from secondary sources). This explains the published rules; it isn’t legal advice.
Set fines on the ticket
The set fine is what you pay if you pay the ticket out of court. It’s charged for every km/h over the limit, and the rate steps up at 20 and 30 over.
| Over the limit | Set fine per km/h | Community safety or construction zone* |
|---|---|---|
| 1–19 km/h | $2.50 | $5.00 |
| 20–29 km/h | $3.75 | $7.50 |
| 30–49 km/h | $6.00 | $12.00 |
| 50+ km/h | No ticket to pay: it goes to court | Court |

What you actually pay
The total printed on a ticket is the set fine, plus the victim fine surcharge, plus $5 in costs. Here are the totals for common speeds.
| Over | Set fine | Ticket total | Total in a zone | Demerit points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 km/h | $12.50 | $27.50 | $40 | 0 |
| 10 km/h | $25 | $40 | $65 | 0 |
| 15 km/h | $37.50 | $52.50 | $95 | 0 |
| 16 km/h | $40 | $55 | $105 | 3 |
| 19 km/h | $47.50 | $62.50 | $120 | 3 |
| 20 km/h | $75 | $95 | $180 | 3 |
| 25 km/h | $93.75 | $118.75 | $227.50 | 3 |
| 29 km/h | $108.75 | $138.75 | $272.50 | 3 |
| 30 km/h | $180 | $220 | $450 | 4 |
| 35 km/h | $210 | $265 | $520 | 4 |
| 40 km/h† | $240 | $295 | $595 | 4 |
| 45 km/h† | $270 | $335 | $670 | 4 |
| 49 km/h† | $294 | $359 | $718 | 4 |
†40–49 over is a speeding ticket only where it stays under the stunt-driving line: where the limit is under 80, 40+ over is stunt driving, and on a 110 km/h highway 40 over is 150 km/h, which is also stunt driving.
Compare 15 and 16 over: the extra km/h adds $2.50 to the ticket and 3 demerit points to your record.
If convicted in court
If you take the ticket to trial and are convicted, the fine follows the Highway Traffic Act, s.128(14). These rates are higher than the ticket. They’re fines on conviction, not what you pay out of court.
| Over the limit | Fine per km/h if convicted | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Under 20 km/h | $3.00 | 15 over: $45 |
| 20–29 km/h | $4.50 | 20 over: $90 |
| 30–49 km/h | $7.00 | 40 over: $280 |
| 50+ km/h | $9.75 | 50 over: $487.50 |
Fine amounts only, before any surcharge and costs. The 40-over example is the one ontario.ca uses.
Your options on a ticket
You usually have 15 days to choose. Paying the ticket is a guilty plea. Option 2 is an early-resolution meeting with a prosecutor. The third option is a trial. If you ignore the ticket, you can be convicted without being there.
Victim fine surcharge table
Ontario adds a surcharge to each fine, set by the size of the fine (O. Reg. 161/00). This is the middle line on every ticket total above.
| Fine | Surcharge |
|---|---|
| $0–50 | $10 |
| $51–75 | $15 |
| $76–100 | $20 |
| $101–150 | $25 |
| $151–200 | $35 |
| $201–250 | $50 |
| $251–300 | $60 |
| $301–350 | $75 |
| $351–400 | $85 |
| $401–450 | $95 |
| $451–500 | $110 |
| $501–1,000 | $125 |
| Over $1,000 | 25% of the fine |
Points, stunt driving and insurance
- Demerit points: 0 for 1–15 over, 3 for 16–29, 4 for 30–49 and 6 for 50+. They stay on your record for 2 years from the offence date. See the demerit points guide.
- Stunt driving: 40+ over where the limit is under 80, 50+ over anywhere, or 150 km/h or more on any road. At the roadside that means a 30-day licence suspension and a 14-day vehicle impoundment. If convicted: $2,000–$10,000 (or up to 6 months in jail), 6 points and a 1–3-year suspension for a first conviction.
- New drivers (G1, G2, M1, M2): a speeding conviction for 30+ over means at least a 30-day licence suspension.
- Insurance: insurers price the conviction, not the points, usually for about 3 years. Brokers estimate one ticket adds roughly 10–25%; treat that as an estimate.

Questions people ask
How much is a speeding ticket in Ontario?
On the ticket, the set fine is $2.50 per km/h over for 1–19 over, $3.75 for 20–29 over and $6.00 for 30–49 over. A victim fine surcharge and $5 in costs are added, so 10 over costs $40, 20 over $95 and 30 over $220 in total. At 50 or more over there is no ticket to pay; it goes to court.
How much is 30 over in Ontario?
$220 on the ticket: a $180 set fine, a $35 victim fine surcharge and $5 in costs, plus 4 demerit points. If convicted in court instead, the fine is $7.00 per km/h over, or $210, before any surcharge and costs.
Are speeding fines doubled in school zones?
Set fines are doubled in community safety zones and in construction zones when workers are present: $5.00, $7.50 or $12.00 per km/h over on the ticket. 20 over in a community safety zone costs $180 in total. In Mississauga, for example, local school zones are community safety zones.
Does paying a speeding ticket count as a conviction?
Yes. Paying the ticket is a guilty plea, so the conviction and any demerit points go on your record. The other options, usually within 15 days, are an early-resolution meeting with a prosecutor (option 2) or a trial. If you ignore the ticket, you can be convicted without being there.
What happens if you go 50 km/h over?
There is no ticket to pay; it goes to court. 50 or more over the limit also counts as stunt driving, which brings an immediate 30-day licence suspension and a 14-day vehicle impoundment at the roadside. If convicted of stunt driving: a $2,000–$10,000 fine, 6 demerit points and a 1–3-year licence suspension for a first conviction.
Is there a grace amount over the speed limit?
No. Any speed over the posted limit is speeding, and Ontario’s set fines start at 1 km/h over.
